Five Senses Garden

If you only knew...

Ms. Michaud just spent three hours talking with a Master Gardener at Home Depot.  I learned what to do with our Strawberries.  I bought the soil for our tomatoes, and I bought two pots for our LONG STEM ROSES.  Oh yes, we can plant long stem roses in a container (Home Depot has some beautiful ones).

I am so excited about our garden.  Most of the things we can get at Home Depot, but some of the stuff we have to get at Pike's Nursery.

To recap what our garden theme is, we are doing a 5 senses garden.  I have the plants for taste (tomatoes and strawberries).

So, here is what we need:

Rosemary plants (2 plants) - Smell

Lavender (2 plants) - Smell

Jasmine (1 plant in the pot) -you have to get the one that smells - Pike's Only

Mint (2 plants) - Smell

Lamb's Ear (we won't do Fox Glove because it is poisonous) (2 plants) - Touch

Roses (2) - Smell and Touch - Home Depot has two kinds - Hybrid Tea and Grandaflora - I would get one of each so the kids can compare the two - they are found in one gallon containers - don't get three gallon containers

Monkey Grass (2) - Sound

Small wind chimes that we can stick in the garden - Sound

Marigolds, Pansies and Petunias will be used for color - Sight - we want a variety of colors to fill in the spaces between the plants

I have crossed out the flowers that people have sid they were going to buy.

If you know what you want to bring, make a comment to this post.

Georgia Project: Now What?

Now that your topics have been selected, I want you to do research on them this weekend.  You have three days to do this, so don't forget.  You need to read all that you can find, then write down the most interesting facts that you can find.  If you just print out an article, I then need the facts that you are using highlighted.  I AM NOT READING THE INFORMATION FOR YOU.

You need to be ready to make the first part of your project, which is the informative part.  You can make a flip book, a poster, or whatever your heart desires, just as long as it is informative.

After this part, we will begin on our product.

Georgia Is On Our Minds

We have finished our SEM unit on Energy and Motion.  Now it is time for us to learn about our great state, Georgia.  There are so many great things to learn about, but we have so little time.  So, we are going to divide and concur!!!

During the month of March, you will be working on a poster and a product that will be presented to the class.  It is your job to pick the most interesting topic or fact about Georgia and teach it to the class.  You can make a PowerPoint Presentation, a paper mache sculpture, a gameboard, sing a song written by a GA band, or whatever your  heart desires.

The first step to this project is to narrow down your topic.  What specifically do you want to learn about:  famous people from Georgia, colleges in GA, crops grown in Georgia, places to visit in Georgia, or even fun things to do in Georgia?  You choose.

Tonight for homework, I want you to get some idea of what you would like to research.  I want your idea written down in your planner for me to check in the morning.

I have found this thing called a widget.  It allowed me to songs.  I have one for the class.  If you want me to add any more songs, let me know.

Keep posted for more totally cool stuff!!!

Independent Reading for the Next 9 Weeks

The deadline to have your 10 books for the nine week grading period is Friday, March 5, 2009.  The next deadline is May 1st (this is only 8 weeks).  By this date I want you to have a total of 16 books read for me.  For those who meet my requirement, we will have a NACHO PARTY for Cinco de Mayo.

Don't worry, this is not a typo.  This is what is going to happen. As of now, you have been reading one chapter book per week (at least most of you have).  Now, I want two books read per week.  At least one has to be a chapter book.  The other can be another chapter book, or it can be a picture book (that is grade appropriate).  I will have a list of picture books you can read.

Since the next piece of writing that you must learn about is a Book Report, I am going to start having you write a book report once a week on the picture book that you have read.  I will teach you how to write exciting reports, and the most exciting ones will be recorded into a podcast and put on our website for everyone to hear.  Doesn't that sound exciting

Oh yea, most of the stories that we have read in class from our reading book are stories that you can take an AR test on.  I have a prize for the first person to go an take all the tests and pass them.  THESE DO NOT COUNT FOR YOU TWO BOOKS PER WEEK, BUT THERE IS A PRIZE FOR DOING THEM.

Check out the latest pictures...

I have finally posted some pictures on our site.  Check them out.  You can post comments to the pictures if you want.

I want to come up with clever names for the pictures along with captions.  I need you help.  If you can think of a funny title and caption for a picture, type it in the comments section.  I will choose the funniest ones and make them permanent.

For an example of what I am talking about, go under "Fun With Cotton", and check out the first picture of "Anna Clause".

Rules of Engagement

This website is what you call a blogging site.  This means that if I write something on my site, anyone can respond to what I wrote.  I want you to use this as a way to practice your research and writing skills.  I may ask you to search the Internet for three facts about whales. Once you find the facts, you need to type your facts up, and post them to this site.  I also may have a survey question for you to answer.  In your spare time, you may even want to post a joke or write a story.

Before you get started, there is a couple of things you need to know:

  1. You must complete any and all assignments that I give you.
  2. You will not post anything that is inappropriate.  That means no violence or bad language.  If you have to ask me whether something is not appropriate, you would be best not to type it at all.

I hope you are ready to begin!!!
